João Afonso

With a unique voice in Lusophone music (that means “Portuguese-Speaking” for the uninitiated!), Mozambique-born singer João Afonso has a distinctive style, marked by the innovation and richness of his compositions.

His first work under his own name appeared in 1997, “Missangas” which earned him the title of Best National Male Voice, from Blitz Magazine. Since then he has built a choir of songs that he always takes on stage in the company of excellent musicians: From intimate concerts full of friendly complicity to more festive bigger shows, with musical histories of multiple sounds.

His music brings together influences from African and Portuguese folk music, through the influence of his uncle, Zeca Afonso, a Portuguese singer-songwriter legend.
